New MacBook, One-time Fender FUSE™, and a Mustang I v2 amp
- Thread starter John L Rose
- Start appointment
Spoiler - It has a generally-happy ending.
I recently got a new MacBook Pro and thought "great, now I can fiddle with the presets on my Mustang amp from my couch, instead of getting up and dragging everything to where my aging Mac mini (2007) is set at a desk-bound".
The bad news is that current Macs ship with macOS 10.15.x, "Catalina", and information technology does non back up 32-bit apps. Apple had been telling developers near this for 10 years, so information technology's deemed to be their error if their apps cease working on new systems.
Fender FUSE™ is one of the 32-bit apps, and for sure it ain't being updated.
Then I learned near the notion of creating another "APSF volume" on my internal SSD.
Run across https://support.apple tree.com/en-ca/guide/disk-utility/dskua9e6a110/mac
It's a bit unlike from a partition: "...And because storage infinite is shared beyond APFS volumes, yous don't need to reserve infinite for the new volume. Its size automatically adjusts to fit your content." No demand to commit a specific portion of your internal bulldoze.
The other salient feature is that you can install the earlier "Mojave" Bone, which notwithstanding supports 32-bit apps.
Name the new APFS volume something distinctly dissimilar from the original so every bit to reduce the possibility of fault afterward.
Likewise see https://support.apple tree.com/en-ca/HT208891 "Installing macOS on a carve up APFS volume".
Before you do anything, perform a Fourth dimension Motorcar backup, if you use one.
Y'all need to download Mojave from the Apple App Store. See https://support.apple tree.com/en-ca/HT210190 , and go down to section iv, and click on Get macOS Mojave.
This will launch the App Store through some kind of back door, because you cannot merely search for "Mojave" in the App Store and get anything that looks like an installer for the OS.
After you click on the "Get" button, it volition download, and and then try to run itself merely it gives an mistake of some sort, probably because it won't install itself over a more than current OS (Catalina). This is a expert thing.
Initially it looks like it did not download considering information technology'due south hiding in the Applications folder (not "Downloads") equally "Install macOS Mojave.app". And alphabetically, it's "I" for "Install...", not "G" for "Mojave...".
If yous try to run that, intending to make the shiny new APFS volume the target, it refuses, proverb "This copy of the 'Install macOS' application is too onetime to be opened on this version of macOS". That would be too piece of cake, but not really a problem because yous have a Plan B...
Create a bootable installer on a USB wink memory stick, as per https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201372
Curlicue down to the "Utilise the 'createinstallmedia' command in Last" and Copy & Paste the option for Mojave in a Terminal window.
Change "MyVolume" to whatever you lot might have named the USB stick.
Information technology assumes that you withal have the "Install macOS Mohave.app" in your Applications folder.
This will completely erase and overwrite whatever might accept been on the stick, so beware.
My installer took upwardly six.05 GB on a 32 GB stick, and then an viii GB stick is probably fine for all hardware.
When that's washed, the stick will appear in the Finder and volition take been renamed "Install macOS Mojave.app". Go out it mounted.
Now go to Organization Preferences and select the "Startup Disk" pane. Click on the padlock icon to unlock information technology using your admin User Proper name and countersign.
Select the bulldoze named "Install macOS Mojave" and click "Restart…".
Eventually you are presented with the "macOS Utilities" window with 4 choices -
- Restore from Time Auto Fill-in",
- Install macOS
- Get Help Online
- Disk Utility
Selection #ii, "Install macOS".
And then you get a window "macOS Mojave" and "To set up up the installation of macOS Mojave, click Continue"
Click Continue, and jump through the hoops to concord to the Software License Understanding.
At present you go to select the newly-created APFS volume as the target for the installation. This is the reason for the distinctly-different book proper noun from earlier steps. If you spiral it upward and choice the original one with the Catalina OS, you may take to restore from the fill-in you should have done before.
Yadda-yadda... Restart, I think ...
After that, it's all pretty much like opening up a brand-new Mac out of the box and having to enter your account info, linguistic communication preference, time zone, wifi server, etc. I merely recycled the same user name, password, and AppleID as on the original organization.
When you finally get all that washed (and maybe restart), I retrieve that'south when it offers to update to Catalina. Just Say No, to leave it at Mojave. You can still go automatic security updates and stuff for Mojave.
Now the problem is to find a copy of the Fender FUSE™ installer. I still had the deejay paradigm with the installer from mode back. I never throw annihilation away.
As near every bit I tin brand out, this page - https://www.thegearpage.net/board/i...can-i-download-the-fender-fuse.2129618/page-2 (encounter postal service #22) links to the aforementioned version of installer that I used -
https://www.fmicassets.com/fender/s...are/fender_fuse/mac/FenderFUSE_FULL_2.vii.1.dmg - and as of this posting, the download however works.
I did take to become through the installation process a number of times, considering it has to find and install MonoFramework and Silverlight software, but doesn't seem to get it correct the first time through. Pretty much the same hassle as on my Mac mini years ago.
I might fifty-fifty accept had to install them without the FUSE installer. Retentiveness fails me.
These two links might yet work:
for MonoFramework MDK (a .pkg file)
and
for Silverlight (a .dmg file)
At present, when I starting time ran the FUSE app, it actually worked, and "saw" the amp!
Then final night I found that it would stall half-way through the "Loading" splash page, and somewhen information technology covered the whole FUSE window with a semi-transparent grey background and a "Blocked Plug-in" message. I had never seen one of those earlier.
*google*google*google*
It turns out that a default setting in Safari was responsible for the blocked plug in. It blocks it for all apps that might utilize Silverlight, I guess.
Real intuitive, correct?
I got pix of the Safari/Preferences to prove it...
It may be that desktop Macs don't have that setting, since at that place is no battery ability to salvage? I dunno.
Once I unchecked that setting, FUSE™ loaded and worked as well as information technology ever did on my Mac mini.
Minus the presets uploads/downloads, of form.
I may have had to reboot the MacBook too to re-enable Silverlight, I forget exactly.
In order to switch back and forth between Catalina and Mojave I have to reboot it with the Option key on startup to select which book to boot from. It'south not too bad because I merely need Mojave occasionally, and the contents of both volumes are accessible from either OS.
This scheme of creating a separate APFS volume and installing Mojave on it is manner amend than my original idea of using Oracle's "VirtualBox" app to run Mojave in emulation, which was a fleck sluggish.
Ooh - it as well meant that I can play Cyan Worlds "Uru" on it. Whee!
This volition exist a fleck of a Shaggy Dog Story, so get yourself a cup of coffee.
Spoiler - It has a mostly-happy ending.I recently got a new MacBook Pro and thought "slap-up, now I can fiddle with the presets on my Mustang amp from my burrow, instead of getting upward and dragging everything to where my aging Mac mini (2007) is set up at a desk".

Thanks, John. So, if you wanted to use Fuse to record into GarageBand, would only be able to use the latest version compatible with Mojave, since you kicking into that version? I haven't used GarageBand in a long time just was thinking about getting a new macbook to record into it - maybe the preset amp sounds are just equally good as what yous can practise with the Fuse software? Do you know? Thank you.
You don't need FUSE to tape, only for picayune with the presets. To my ears, too many of the factory presets are overdriven in a less than cool fashion. The amp by itself is a A-to-D converter with a USB interface.Thank you, John. So, if y'all wanted to utilize Fuse to record into GarageBand, would only exist able to use the latest version compatible with Mojave, since you boot into that version? I haven't used GarageBand in a long time but was thinking nearly getting a new macbook to record into it - maybe the preset amp sounds are just as skilful equally what you can do with the Fuse software? Exercise you know? Thanks.
At present that I recollect of it though, I did accept some difficulty getting a clean sound to tape on the MacBook Pro, using Audacity and GarageBand. I can't stand GarageBand anyway. I forget what the result was. I as well had trouble with an old Griffin iMic interface.
Oh yeah - FUSE was likewise the customer app, if you lot will, for connecting to the now-defunct "community" for uploading and downloading user-developed presets. As Basil Fawlty might say, "That item pleasure has been cut off!"
The solution was, as yous said, simply to get to Advanced Settings in Safari and de-select the Internet Plug-ins pick. Restarted the program and it worked just fine. Even while running Catalina. None of those other massive workarounds seem to be necessary and I'm running an older 2012 iMac.
Hope that helps
